As my dad finished the Thanksgiving prayer, I reflected on some of his words.

"Whether it was 400 years ago or 50, our ancestors had courage when they left their homeland in search of a new land and a new freedom. We are thankful today to be surrounded by four generations of family in celebration of our history, our great nation, and the abundance of life."

As we gathered around the Thanksgiving meal, I felt thankful for the incredible bond of family.

To My Grandparents: I am thankful to live just a block away from wise and loving grandparents who are always eager to hear and tell stories. I am thankful for your outstanding health at 89 years old and for your willingness to adapt to the texting era.

To My Mom: As I become more and more like you every day, I am thankful for your friendship, guidance (even from 1,000 miles away), and loving--yet slightly, tearful--embrace every time I return home.

To My Dad: It's not a surprise to say that I am thankful for your love of cooking, especially as I enjoy this Thanksgiving feast. However, I am even more thankful for the strong faith you have showed us and for your unwavering support in every step of my journey.

To My Brothers, Joe & Greg: There's nothing as special, and crazy, as being book-ended by two brothers. I am thankful to have the most loyal, supportive, and candid brothers.

To My Cousin, Amy & Husband Kenny: Thank you for being a cousin I can look up and for showing us the love you have formed in your own little family.

To Kira & Baby Austin: Thank you for keeping us young and on our toes this Thanksgiving and for reminding us of the joys of being a child!
